The Roots took a minute off from recording their upcoming new album, Undun, to let their hair down and just rip shit up in the studio. They also scaled back the band to just drums, guitar, and tuba, or half of their typical lineup. And what ensued was a shit-kicking take on the Captain Morgan theme song, “To Life, Love & Loot,” that features frontman Black Thought channelling his inner Jimi Hendrix.
The end result is something you’d want to hear from, say, Lenny Kravitz, but instead you’re getting it from one of the hardest working hip-hop groups ever. Maybe this is the direction they’ll go in after Undun, which drops Dec. 6. Listen to the track below. [Spin]
