Listen to Prince’s Unreleased ‘Purple Rain’-Era “Father’s Song”

The previously unreleased ballad will be included in the 'Purple Rain Deluxe' reissue this month.

The Purple One’s estate oversees a vast arsenal of unreleased, unfinished, and tantalizingly unobtainable Prince-penned musical works. “The vault,” as it’s usually referred to, has long been an open secret feeding the mystique of Prince lore.

But following the prolific songwriter’s tragically premature death last year, some of these unseen masterpieces have been slowly trickling their way into public view.

Most recently, “Father’s Song,” a number originating from sometime during the Purple Rain sessions has been made available to the masses. You can hear an excerpt of the track below.

According to the appropriately titled Prince Vault fansite, the song appeared on an early configuration of Purple Rain but was ultimately scrapped, with its dominant melody being adopted for “Computer Blue.” A brief excerpt of the song does appear in the Purple Rain film, however, when Prince’s character The Kid discovers it in his father’s sheet music collection and then performs the melody on a piano.

Another previously unreleased track, “Our Destiny / Roadhouse Garden,” was shared last month.

Both songs will be included on an upcoming deluxe reissue of Prince’s classic Purple Rain soundtrack. The reissue will be offered in two formats, Purple Rain Deluxe and Purple Rain Deluxe – Expanded Edition, both to be released on June 23. Purple Rain Deluxe will include a 2015 “Paisley Park Remaster” of the original album with a second disc of rarities. The Expanded Edition will include both main discs in addition to a bonus disc of b-sides and alternate versions and a Prince and the Revolution Live at the Carrier Dome, Syracuse, NY, March 30, 1985 DVD.
