Lionsgate Considering A ‘Saw’ Franchise Reboot

Lionsgate’s critically loathed, yet commercially successful Saw series may be getting a reboot – just two years after the last installment. Horror website Bloody Disgusting broke the news, though their source claims that the studio is only “tinkering” with the idea and may scrap it for an eighth installment in the original series.

The announcement may come as a surprise, as the last Saw movie, Saw 3D,as billed as “The Final Chapter.” But horror fans know not to trust that moniker: the last horror film to bear that moniker was Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter and was followed by a sequel the next year (and six more after that). Besides, the rumors of an eighth Saw movie were rumored just months after Saw 3D hit theaters.

While nothing has been confirmed, it’s not surprising that Lionsgate is ready to return to the well: each of the Saw movies have grossed over $100 million domestically with the largest budget at the $17 million mark. Regardless of whether they continue the original story or come up with a new torture-porn scenario, the numbers alone make it pretty clear that we can expect a new Saw movie hitting the screen soon.
