Track review: Lily Allen “Mr. Blue Sky (ELO cover)”

If commercials and movie trailers were any indicator of Electric Light Orchestra’s body of work, they would have only recorded one song, “Mr. Blue Sky.” That Lily Allen has chosen this particular song make total sense because this version was used for SFR, a French mobile phone company. Allen’s version, which is being touted as the single from an alleged upcoming album, is certainly pleasant enough, but it’s a fairly ho-hum, by-the-numbers cover. Allen’s only real innovation is that it’s considerably less piano driven than the original and heavy on the synthesizer and drum machine (and the vocals, of course). [Stereogum]
