Lillith 2010, a package tour featuring Mary J. Blige, Erykah Badu, Sheryl Crow, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, Gossip and Sarah McLachlan, has found the market for an all-female festival bill doesn't exist in this tough economy. Festival founder Terry McBride offered the following apology and explanation:
“We are in the midst of one of the most challenging summer concert seasons with many tours being cancelled outright. Everyone involved with the tour would like to apologize to the fans and artists scheduled to play in these markets, and express appreciation for all the support for the festival’s return. Lilith remains the only tour of its kind, and we are confident that fans will be amazed by what each date has to offer.”
The shows cancelled are: Salt Lake City (7/12), Montreal (7/23), Raleigh (8/4), Charlotte (8/6), West Palm Beach (8/10), Tampa (8/11), Birmingham (8/12), Austin (8/14), Houston (8/15) and Dallas (8/16). Refunds are available from ticket sellers. Shows still scheduled can be found here. [The Daily Swarm]
Did you happen to notice that except for Montreal all of the canceled shows are in the south or southwest ?
IF as you suggest it is because of the line up then that is rather interesting.
sll
I think the venues chosen created much of the difficulties, of course as well as the economy. I dislike most amphitheaters and most of them are owned by large corporations that over charge on ticket fees and drinks and food. They are putting themselves out of business. Maybe Lilith can re-strategize and think in terms of more intimate venues like the wonderful independently owned theaters throughout the country. I still think there's a need for more well know female artists to help publicize less well known female artists. So I was sorry to hear of these cancellations.
