Thought the defiling of Sgt. Pepper's had gone far enough upon the album's 40th anniversary? Think again Today comes news that Libertines essentials Pete Doherty and Carl Barat are reuniting to record a cover version of what is arguably the record's centerpiece, "A Day in the Life," as part of an ongoing BBC tribute to the album. Go ahead and look up how to listen to it tomorrow (June 16) if you're into that kind of torture. As for me, I think "Day in the Life" is one of those sacred songs that other acts shouldn't dirty their grubby paws with.
More Beatles butchering

Um. "A Day in the Life" is classic -- sundland is an idiot. Not that that means it shouldn't be covered -- no song shouldn't be covered. |

Here's the thing. It is a great song. Only an idiot would say that it isn't, but who's to say who should or shouldn't put their own spin on it. I do believe that those two (Barat & Doherty) have the chops and soul to make it their own. Your old bitter dad might not agree. |

libertines most important band since oasis? do you put crack on your cornflakes for breakfast, mate? Oasis were ****, and it's quite funny you mention them when talking about the beatles since they're notorious for ripping them off. Oasis were bad, libertines even worse. The Beatles were the greatest band of all time. laters |

Oh please. Shitty cover versions do nothing to detract from the majesty of the originals, they just make the coverers look stupid. I heard this band called Big Daddy on NPR doing a cover of "Day in the Life" in the style of Buddy Holly. Ridiculous, but fun. And I gotta say I don't mind the live versions of the song that Phish used to do.
