LeRoi Moore, saxophonist for Dave Matthews Band, dies at 46

'Tis the season for popular entertainers/musicians to be dying, I suppose. LeRoi Moore, who has been with Dave Matthews Band since their formation in 1991, died in a Los Angeles hospital earlier today. Say what you will about Dave Matthews, but the band's mix of Soweto beats, jazz, and jam-band aesthetics has proven to have massive, worldwide appeal, and this is sad, untimely news.

Moore was injured in an ATV wreck in Charlottsville, Virginia back in June, which resulted in a collapsed lung and several broken ribs. While he had been repeatedly re-hospitalized due to complications, the death was still unexpected. The following statement was posted on DMB's website:

We are deeply saddened that LeRoi Moore, saxophonist and founding member of Dave Matthews Band, died unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, August 19, 2008, at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in Los Angeles from sudden complications stemming from his June ATV accident on his farm near Charlottesville, Virginia. LeRoi had recently returned to his Los Angeles home to begin an intensive physical rehabilitation program.

We wish our deepest condolences to the band and Moore's family.

As much as I couldn't stand the band (not due to the band itself, but the the cult of fans that surrounded me in college earlier this decade) I liked the attitude and "everybody-is-welcomed-to-the-party" vibe. I also liked a good amount of their songs so I'm not that much of a hater. I'll always associate their sound with my college years.

I hope the band pulls through and my condolences to Moore's family.

There's no reason for Prefix to be apologetic about posting DMB-related news like this...even if we don't cater to the standard DMB audience here, the death of any great musician is a blow to music as a whole. Moore was a terrific musician, like the rest of his band members. With the exception of Boyd Tinsley, who I never thought was an engaging fiddler. But I wouldn't be happy if Boyd Tinsley were dead, either.

As probably the only DMB fan here, I would like to say that I spent many a summer afternoon listening to Dave and hanging with friends listening to thier music...the fans may not be the best, but you can say that about any band. These guys were a great band. RIP LeRoi...

DMB is the greatest band to ever live. There aren’t many bands out there that can accomplish what these guys have. They are defiantly a one of a kind band and LeRoi Moore will be greatly missed. As being the founder of this remarkable band, LeRoi can never be fully replaced. His music will live on for eternity and so will his endless cleverness on the Saxophone. DMB will never fall, despite the loss of one great man. Instead, they will keep the music alive and play year after year to keep the sprits of LeRoi a float. Dave, Carter, Stefan and Boyd, my deepest sympathy to the group, to the millions of fans out there, and mostly to the family of LeRoi Moore.

We will all miss you LeRoi. You will never die in our eyes.

I'm really upset. Although I dont know the band members personally,I feel that they share their spirits with me,I have heard it through each members performance. On "say goodbye" I can hear leroi's heart like a bell its a beautiful provocative intro unlike any other that i've heard he talks to the audience with his performance as in most of dmb's musical pieces. He musically seduces you into a song.No one ever told me about DMB I discovered them on my own through wanting to hear more. The man was magical. I'm sorry for the loss of both families and to music and ours.
