When Marvel's Thor was released last year, it was reasonably successful and ensured that a sequel would be forthcoming. However, the triumph of The Avengers this year raised the stakes for the character, giving him a higher profile and demanding that subsequent installments live up to the high benchmark Joss Whedon's tentpole set.
Fortunately, viewers who are hungry for details about Thor 2 should be thrilled that Disney has leaked some information about how the second movie will play out.
According to NME, the picture will be subtitled The Dark World. Cast members Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins, Idris Elba and Tom Hiddleston will reprise their roles as Asgardian gods, this time threatened by a new enemy. The foe is Malekith the Accursed, and he will be played by former Doctor Who Christopher Eccleston.
Natalie Portman will also be returning as Thor's love interest, but original director Kenneth Branagh will be moving on to other projects. Instead, Game of Thrones' Alan Taylor will be in charge, and he'll certainly have to be mindful of how any plot developments will play out in future Marvel pictures.
