Last.fm’s best of 2008 lists are more intriguing than what mags like Q and Blender have to offer, in that they provide a list of what people listened to the most in 2008. By going here, you can look at their lists for the most played albums, the most played artists, and the most played songs of 2008.
Here’s a run-down:
Albums: I’m kind of depressed that a lot of people listened to the new Kooks album Konk (number 6), as I found that to be something of a turd. I was surprised at the inclusion of Portishead (number 3), and the Nine Inch Nails instrumental album (number 4). I can’t say I’m surprised MGMT hit number 2 (those cats have been all over everyone’s mind all year), or for the fact that Coldplay’s Viva La Vida took the top spot, after last.fm had the album early to stream.
Artists: The artists list contains some bigger surprises (like Santogold (number 10), Does It Offend You, Yeah? (number 9), the Last Shadow Puppets (number 6)), but to no surprise, MGMT takes the top spot for artist searches.
Songs: This list is a bit superfluous since the top album list will indicate the top songs, thus Coldplay scores six entries (including number one), MGMT gets three, and Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl” gets number seven.

I just started listening to MGMT, which I never do, on LastFM, which I never do, so I probably contributed. Oops.
