Lars Ulrich doesn't have a problem with sound on Death Magnetic
The problems with the compressed sound on Metallica’s Death Magnetic have already generated several acres of column space. The most recent story about the sound issue saw MusicRadar guitar editor Chris Vinnecombe discover that the sound is marginally better in the Guitar Hero version of the record. But what does Metallica drummer and notorious motormouth Lars Ulrich think of the issue?
Writing on Blender’s blog, Ulrich comments in typically enthusiastic fashion: “I've been listening to it the last couple of days in my car, and it sounds fuckin' smokin'.” Ulrich was famously concerned about the audio quality of MP3 files when Napster emerged, but if seems that the new 'net-friendly Lars no longer cares about such issues. “A lot of people say [the CD] sounds great, and a few people say it doesn't, and that's OK,” he says.
Sadly, the Internet is moving too fast for Ulrich these days: “The Internet gives everybody a voice, and the Internet has a tendency to give the complainers a louder voice. Listen, I can't keep up with this shit,” he bemoans. The Metallica documentary Some Kind of Monster suggested that Lars runs most of his ideas past his sage-like father Torben Ulrich, who may need to clean out his ears next time the boys hit the studio.
