Langerado Music Festival 2009 cancelled

Langerado Music Festival 2009 cancelled

Maybe the first victim of our ailing economy, the 2009 Langerado Music Festival has been cancelled, due to sluggish ticket sales.

Langerado co-promoter Ethan Schwartz puts it thus: "Langerado has always put the fan experience first. Unfortunately, during these difficult economic times, and facing a first year in a new venue, it's become apparent that we cannot execute a production that lives up to the high standards of our past events. Putting Langerado on hold was the toughest decision we have ever had to make. We are very grateful for the support of the greater-Miami community and the music community during this difficult time."

Bummer. Among the bands scheduled to play Langerado this year were Death Cab for Cutie, Thievery Corporation, Snoop Dogg, Broken Social Scene, Deerhunter, Modest Mouse, and Public Enemy.

Wow that sucks. One of the best festivals this year I thought.

I was really looking forward to Langerado. This sucks.

I'd like to add to the chorus of lament here. I think this is the second festival to take '09 off, after Pemberton threw in the towel. How many other "mid-major" type fests do you guys think could go on hiatus? Who's the most vulnerable?

For long-term festival success, you have to build a community - a "where everybody knows your name" vibe, even if you're drawing 100k. Start depending on corporate interests, selling tickets at jacked-up prices for fair-to-middling quality lineups (artists don't have to be famous to be great, and vice versa), and ignoring the wants/needs of a festival fanbase are just asking for failure. Greed doesn't sit well with real music fans.

Megan

This is a big bummer. I was really looking forward to Langerado. Maybe, they should of kept it in Big Cypress instead of moving it to Miami. Last year was a lot of fun..... Does anyone know why they switched locations?

Nicholas Monaco

Lets not forget the conflict with the phish comeback here folks. Those washed up hippies have a way bigger draw on the festival set than any of the hacks on the would've been langerado lineup, and rightfully so.

JBills

Yeah, I'd say the venue change was more the reason for lack of interest than the economy. I know that when they changed venues, I lost interest, at least.

chris

Wow dude that is a MAJOR bummer.

Maybe it's just me, but cost has nothing to do with why I decided against Langerado this year. Langerado 2008 @ Big Cypress was amazing, but who the hell wants to go to a festival like this in Miami? One of the best parts of fests is being able to enjoy great music all day and then being able to camp out with your buds without having to deal with getting back to a house/hotel/offsite campground.

IMHO, Langerado 09 did failed due to a lame venue as opposed to the economy being crap.choice of venue. Let's all hope that things come together better for 2010!

Craig

not many musicians travel all the way to south florida...it's always nice when langerado comes around...sad day for music lovers local to s. florida

langeradofan

The location was horrendous for a music festival and the lineup was lame and alienated loyal langeradoans. The lack of camping was the nail in the coffin.

People are blaming this in part on the Phish show but seriously, how many people is that really going to affect?

c

They shouldn't have moved it to the different location.
"Free"- camping over dishing out hundreds of dollars for a crappy Miami hotel, was probably the last thing langerado goers needed to hear.

Number 1 rule...listen to the fans!! When we first discovered that Langerado would be in Miami so many people said they were not going due to cost.If the powers that be were really being cost efficient they would have considered the economy from the day they thought to move the festival to Miami. People can barley afford to buy the tickets and then you want them to pay for a hotel, which on the website stated they were discounted showing cost from $149 to $299, go to shows in bars/clubs where there will be charged a cover and do not allow re-entry into the park...hmmm...No wonder it was doomed from the start.

Polarberrhugg

Megan, you said it perfectly!

Cost wasn't the factor for us until we learned where this festival would be taking place...then cost was everything. There was no way we wanted to spend our money to drive down to Miami 3-days in a row, to fight traffic, to pay spiked parking prices, and then drive home every night.

Langerado has been fantastic in the past, and this part of Ethan Schwartz's comment pretty much sums it up: "it's become apparent that we cannot execute a production that lives up to the high standards of our past events"

I hope this doesn't mean the end of Langerado, because I believe it can still be great....as long as great choices are made....good luck with this Ethan.

Christine

I think it has more to do with the change of location and the Phish shows in Hampton (that sold out in 10 minutes) scheduled for the same weekend than the economy, really...

musicgal

The economy is not the reason. Bonaroo is more expensive than langerado and will probably sell out. The reasons for this are pretty obvious..and the economy has little to do with it.

1) Change of location: moved from campgrounds to miami forcing everyone to have to book hotels.
2) Bad lineup - last years was fantastic, this years was mediocre
3) Phish - Dont schedule your festival the same weekend as phish reunion. Thats 13000 people a night who are no logner going to be itnerested in attending your festival.

obviously

ya, the whole problem was the change in venue, the whole point of langerado is to camp out and listen to good music for 3 days, now that its in miami, it has become a totally different thing. no longer is it about being away from the hustle and bustle to chill for 3 days, it is now more of a hastle to even attend now that its in miami. putting u right in the middle of the hustle and bustle.

thats y im not going anyways, dont want to ruin the past experiences of langerado by going to it in miami, which is where im from.

uhhhh

last year was crap. There were tons of cancellations, scheduling bands that didnt play at their scheduled time, and in a hell-hole of a camping ground. Not to mention all the sound problems for acts like Beastie Boys that could've been good but fell flat due to terrible, terrible sound. It wasn't even a question in my mind to consider going this year, no matter how good the lineup was.

Aside from the 10 p.m. quittin' time, what was wrong with Markham Park??

msolu

last year was not bad at all. i think they lost alot of ticket sales due to the no camping. but everyone check out harvest of hope festival its the same weekend.

There are anywhere between 5 and 7 million people in the South Florida area, so I doubt that the Phish reunion was a major factor even if they sold out. The Economy is in the gutter, and the unemployment rate in FL is one of the highest in the nation, to be more specific Miami is the third highest city for unemployment in the nation. People just dont have the disposable income to be able to go to a festival and get hotels at $149 a night, which we all know is much higher when you add all the rediculous taxes and charges the hotels add. Thats what killed this festival!

JB

Ethan wanted to make 10 million not 5 million.
The promoters ruined langerado 09 with a lineup and location that was horrible

Why did you not listen to all of us ,you blocked are post and did not care about the one thing that made langerado what it was The people, from all walks of life,

By the way Ethan Schwartz snoop dog would like his other 400,000 you owe him from his agreement with langerado

Guess we will see you at britney with you're VIP tickets

tammy

The reason I didnt get tickets is exactly what everyone above is saying. First the lineup sucks horribly. Second moving to the middle of Miami doesnt sound like fun to me, I love getting outdoors and camping, Its what I look forward to all year and then to have to deal with hotels and driving and traffic for crap bands! No way, It wasnt the economy imo, it was the lineup, and the location. Maybe next year they will pull heads out of you know where and get a jam band line up (example All Good) and move to a great camp location and the crowds will show.

Tim

The organizers of Langerado lost the recipe for success (or got greedy). Having been to every Langerado since 2003, I experienced the rise of this amazing music festival. It's about chill music and camping out...not Snoop Dogg and Downtown Miami. Duh?

If I want to party at Bayfront park I'll go to Ultra, and party with a bunch of skinny degenerates.

Special Tom

Ethan Schwartz sold us out to Rap .
Its funny how he has disappeared from the music interviews. He sank langerado with Bad Karma line up and flicked us all the bird and kept are processing fee on the tickets .I hope you guys learned that mark brown needs to kick Ethan Schwartz to the curb.If there ever will be a langerado again ,get rid of the one man that sank the ship. Langerado you cant forget your past.

Nommie
