Lambchop's Kurt Wagner took a break from writing music following the death of longtime friend and collaborator Vic Chesnutt, who passed away in December 2009. In an attempt to properly express his emotions, Wagner focused on his visual art. But he couldn't escape music and it was actually in his art studio where Lambchop's upcoming album, Mr. M, began taking shape.
According to a press release, Wagner was approached by former bandmate/produer Mark Nevers, who asked about making a new Lampchop record. "He had a concept of a sound and a method that worked with the tone of my writing," Wagner said. "His idea was a kind of ‘psycha-Sinatra’ sound, one that involved the arranging of strings and other sounds in a more open and yet complex way."
The result is an album Wagner said could be Lambchop's last. Mr. M is due out Feb. 20 on City Slang Records and you can stream album opener "If Not I'll Just Die" below.
