LaLa recreates your music collections, friends' on the Web
This one can't possibly last long.
LaLa has existed as a service allowing people to trade CDs cheaply. Apparently the people behind the service have also been busy ripping CDs, because they have now launched an application that can scan your iTunes collection and let you stream the equivalent tracks from their library (or uploading the tracks if they don't happen to have it already). Internet veterans may remember MP3.com, which let you confirm that you owned a CD and would let you play it from their library.
After the jump: Listen to your friends' collections!
Of course, MP3.com didn't last, and considering LaLa makes things even easier by scanning your hard drive or iPod, it's an interesting legal quandary. It gets even more interesting considering you can add friends and listen to their collection.
The service does offer actual purchases, in the form of 99 cent tracks. These tracks are unprotected but download direct to your iPod, thus (theoretically) skirting the file sharing. This does require a bit of a reconfigure to iTunes, changing it to manually sync, so people who use the iTunes store or like things to be sync'ed automatically may be a little leery. So far LaLa has one legitimate label in their corner, with Warner providing preview tracks and purchases.
