It’s strange that the VMAs still exist. MTV hasn’t given a hoot about music for the best part of a decade or more now, but here they come again, now in their 26th year of existence, with Lady GaGa leading the pack of nominees vying for moonman statues when the event comes around on Sept. 12.
The Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles will accommodate Gaga and her outré outfits for the event, where she will be competing with some expected names (Eminem, Ke$ha, Justin Bieber) and some less so (30 Seconds to Mars, Broken Bells, Mumford & Sons). Yes, execrable folkies Mumford & sons really did pick up a nomination, in the Best Cinematography section for the “Little Lion Man” clip.
In truth, there aren’t too many surprises here, although Vampire Weekend might feel slighted after the success of Contra, and surely Gorillaz deserved more nominees than the palty one they got for “Stylo” in the Breakthrough Video section? But chances are Gaga will dominate proceedings anyway, unless Kanye has got another trick up his sleeve.
