We’ve heard the song and seen the typically outré Grammys performance, now most people are just waiting to see the video for Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way.” But while we wait, here are some sales figures to chew over in regard to the song, which has risen to become the 1,000th No. 1 in the history of the Billboard 100.
The single sold a mind boggling 448,000 copies in just three days, and reached a first-week audience of around 78.5 million people via radio play. The latter figure is the highest opening week for a song since figures from radio were incorporated into Billboard stats back in December 1998.
Those 448,000 copies sold is also a record for a debut sales week for a female artist, breaking Britney Spears’ total for “Hold It Against Me” (which pulled in 411,000). "It is a tremendous honor," Gaga told Billboard in a statement. "To be the 1000th no. 1 on Billboard...I would be silly not to say this is the greatest honor of my career."
