It’s difficult to measure the popularity of recorded music in a time when piracy is still rife throughout the industry. Sites like Last.fm offer some indication as to our listening habits, but YouTube is increasingly being sourced as a barometer of how many people are listening to a particular artist.
With that in mind, the race is now on to get to the one billion views mark on the video hosting site, with Justin Bieber and Lady GaGa both battling it out to reach that particular milestone. According to Billboard stats, Gaga should reach that point around Oct. 20 at her current pace—which clocks in at an astonishing 1.8 million views per day.
Bieber is set to hit one billion views on Nov. 1 if his fans continue to eat up his online clips—in September he registered a frankly mind boggling 3.7 million views per day. In overall terms, Bieber’s “Baby” is YouTube’s most-viewed music clip, with around 345 million views, while Gaga’s “Bad Romance” is second with 288 million.
