Zozobra/Clouds/Autonym @ Mountain Bar, 4/11Not to say that Cave In's last album Perfect Pitch Black was entirely without merit, but it's safe to say that the Hydra Head label's former flagship band recorded its best work years ago. No use mourning though, because nearly every member of the band has at least one worthwhile side project a-brewin', and two of the best are on this bill. Zozobra comprises Cave In's resident growler/bassist Caleb Scofield and Santos Montano, known for his work in the Isis/Cave In moonlighers Old Man Gloom (of which Scofield is also a member). The project represents the writing debut of Sir Scofield, and unsurprisingly, Zozobra sound a hell of a lot like Cave In, perhaps a little groovier, weedier and without the vocal histrionics. Clouds, on the other hand, explore the grimy bottom end of Stooges-style proto-metal and boogie rock; their new album The Legendary Demos may not have a whiff of innovation, but damn if guitarist/singer Adam McGrath doesn't sound like he's having more fun than he has in years as the guitarist for Cave In - and my oh my, he gets to solo! Openers Autonym need to fire their vocalist and give his royalties to whoever writes the neato spazzoid metal riffs. (ER)
