L.A. Today: Silverchair

Silverchair @ El Rey, 2/18

It seemed unthinkable that the precocious '90s alt-rockers Silverchair would return after their hiatus; vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Daniel Johns (pictured) has seen not only an eating disorder (which, strangely enough, sparked album sales due to ''"Ana'''s Song''"), but also a severe bout with reactive arthritis, which prevented him from playing guitar and his group from performing after 2002'''s Diorama. Such drama, no? But Johnsy'''s bounced back from the arthritis (and a stint in side project the Dissociatives, which you'''ll sadly find in Amoeba'''s clearance bin). (Silverchair bandmates Chris Joannou and Ben Gillies also held side projects--the Mess Hall and Tambalane, respectively.) The trio of now-twenty-seven-year-olds is returning strongly, though, having already sold out their six upcoming North American shows and literally counting down to the release of fifth album Young Modern--check their Web site for the counter. If you don'''t have a soft spot for these Aussie boys, you were clearly born after 1986. (CB)

Oh, Dave. One day there'll be a concert in L.A. sponsored by Bjore, and then we'll have a more interesting point to focus on. Til then, til then...

wait, wait, hold on here. You're talking trash on Silversun pickups and yet saying positive things about Silverchair? Something ain't right.

I'd like to note that there was a touch of sarcasm in the final sentence that apparently failed. Also, my soft spot was a big mound of love back in 1996.

Born in 1988, and love silverchair. Personally, I find they've evolved into a terrifically inventive band, and Daniel Johns is an undeniably gifted vocalist.

So glad there's someone like you out there, Artemisian. I actually heard them on Jonesy's Jukebox the day of their show, and fell in love all over again when they and Steve Jones played "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport" on air. Daniel Johns really does have a nice voice, though, and they definitely did evolve quite a bit.

Really love that new single "Straight Lines." I heard it in the same block on the radio with "Tomorrow." Which, looking back on it now, is a really horrid song.
