OOIOO @ The Echo, 3/27Imagine walking through a Japanese forest, in Africa, on mushrooms, with Stephen Malkmus. Oh, yeah, and you got there on a spaceship. May not make much sense, but that's kind of what it's like listening to OOIOO. The band, consisting of four Japanese women led by Boredoms drummer Yoshimi P-We, mixes elements of noise, psychedelic and African music, with group chanting, tribal-style drumbeats, and off-kilter sound effects as recurrent themes. The result is music that's sometimes intense, sometimes pretty, and always interesting. OOIOO's stage performance promises to be even better (and reputedly involves fluorescent body paint.) But even without the body paint, seeing this bizarrely beautiful music live is undoubtedly something worth trying out. (RC)
