Midnight Movies @ Viper Room, 3/26Round about the release of their debut back in late 2004, L.A.'s own Midnight Movies were sucked into the indie rock hype mill, their dark wave, Yo La Velvet Underground Stereolab amalgamations garnering positive reviews and earning them nominations in the LA Weekly Music Awards. To these jaded ears, the band sounded a little soulless, partly due to drummer/vocalist Gena Olivier's limited voice, which sounded as emotion-bereft as Nico's but without her Teutonic excuse. So it's nice to hear the strides that Midnight Movies have made on their second disc Lion the Girl, set for an April 24th release date. Maybe it's the wisdom gained after another three years in the trenches, maybe Olivier is freed to concentrate on emoting now that a new girl has been recruited for the drumseat (the very capable Sandra Vu). Whatever the reason, Midnight Movies fresh, moody and confident on Lion the Girl - the perfect complement for Blonde Redhead and Clinic on tour, or a headlining gig back at home. Put the popcorn in the microwave and come watch. (ER)
