Jill Cunniff @ Hotel Cafe, 3/29With my naked eye I saw a blossoming career for Jill Cunniff. The former Luscious Jackson lead singer is out and about promoting her debut solo effort City Beach. Fans of the 90s phenomenon, rejoice! Jill's new album is very reminiscent of the band's weightless tracks, minus the harmonious cooing from other band members. Perhaps strategy, perhaps coincidence, but this album hit shelves at the same time as Luscious Jacksons Greatest Hits release. So if it's "Naked Eye" and "Lady Fingers" you're craving, grab a copy of City Beach and rejoice in the tastefully crafted pop smoothed over by Cunniff's cool, calm, collected vocals. Perfect for the next iPod commercial, a track like "Happy Warriors" is pleasantly catchy, while "Lazy Girls" begs to be the soundtrack to sun-soaked frisbee at Zuma Beach this summer. (NB)
