L.A. Today: Ian Svenonius book signing

Ian Svenonius @ Mountain Bar, 3/13
Ian Svenonius
Last summer, when Ian Svenonius (Weird War/Scene Creamers, The Make-Up, Nation of Ulysses) released his book of essays, The Psychic Soviet, he toured to present the collection but never made it to the west coast. Now, the gap is finally set to close, and Californians will get a belated taste of the man. The Psychic Soviet itself crammed loads of theory into a hot pink, pocket-sized bible of a book. It declared the relativity of music trends to the housing market and physical space availability, and noted how a culture's beverage of choice represents dominance over the country that produces it (labeled less delicately by Svenonius as "the blood of their vanquished foe"). In addition to his presentation and reading, Svenonius (under the moniker DJ Name Names) will be DJ-ing alongside former K Records label mate Calvin Johnson. And because Svenonius is a multi-tasker, the Ooga Booga store will be using this very event to launch the DVD release of his claymation shorts, which comprise The Launching of the Dream Weapon. (CB)

Wow, this was disappointing. I don't think Ian was prepared to give serious answers, and I don't think the audience was prepared to ask decent questions. I was entertained by the slide show and Ian's lisp, though.
