Dir En Grey @ Wiltern, 2/23Are you a people-watcher? Do you consider some metal shows a fascinating social experiment? Do you like watching a mass of people freak out over someone you've never heard of? If you answered yes to any of the above questions, than find a way to grab tickets to see Japan's Dir en grey at the Wiltern, where the audience reaction is at least as crazy as the band onstage (and the band is pretty crazy itself). Dir en grey damn near caused a riot last year at SXSW thanks to overwhelming demand and response, predominantly due to lead singer/nutjob Kyo, whose possessed stage demeanor and self-mutilation had the crowd in a thrall. It's safe to say this wouldn't have the same attraction if it was a couple of dudes in T-shirts, but Marilyn Manson's music wasn't initially anything special either. (ML)
