L.A. Today: Danava @ The Scene

Danava @ The Scene, 3/7

It seems as though shirtlessness has been intrinsically linked to rock n' roll since its very inception. From the hairless posturing of Robert Plant to the fur-covered jubilance of Paul Stanley, lead singers have repeatedly taken it upon themselves to bare their areolas for an adoring public. Well it seems Danava's Dusty Sparkles has paid close attention to his predecessors as he insists on displaying his belly button lint for all who've paid to attend. Not only does this full-fledged endorser of noms de plume get half naked for shows, but he also unabashedly sports a set of bangs the likes of which you don't see often outside of summer stock Shakespeare. "Why all this focus on the band's stylistic choices?" you ask. Because the band's appearance is almost just as contrived as their spacey ditties. Boasting harmonized guitars as well as almost omnipresent synth wankery, this Portland, OR group (pronounced "don-uh-vuh") has made it their mission to revive the genre of acid rock. Unfortunately, they've gone about it with mixed results. While their debut on Kemado fell well short of the mark -- thanks to essentially unbearable production and long-winded meandering -- the band has displayed the ability to bring it live. Some bands (and their lead singers) just need to be seen to be believed. Danava is certainly one of them. (ZH)

This band is amazing. Their record is phenomenal but seeing them live is on some next level type stuff (which is why some people don't like the record but it's way better than ZH gives it credit for). Go to this. You will not be disappointed. Some people write them off as throwbacks but when the digital effects kick in during the live set you will be in awe. And close your eyes during the jams. It makes for a much better sonic experience than focusing on the "look" of the band.
