Cold War Kids @ El Rey, 2/21

Cold War Kids have come a long way from their Fullerton, CA beginnings and their first EP, Mulberry Street. After relentless gigging '' including a residency at Spaceland '' and critical praise from Spin and Rolling Stone (and, most importantly, Prefix), it'''s safe to say the Kids are definitely alright. Their signature sound of blues-based rock, rife with jangly guitars and hand claps, was once described as a cross between the Velvet Underground and Jeff Buckley; that sells them short. Their early practice sessions, which focused less on instruments and more on stomping and chanting, have served them well and their live shows are intense; you can almost imagine them clanging on pipes and thumping on plywood walls. After the first couple of numbers you just may want to join the Cold War Kids on stage.(JM)
