L.A. Today: Clinic

Clinic @ Troubadour, 3/2
Clinic
Not to lump the Brits into a metaphorical fondue pot, but does anyone find that the voice that leads Clinic matches what Kasabian'''s Tom Meighan would sound like with a speech impediment? Of course, given that Clinic'''s members routinely perform in surgical masks and scrubs, there'''s not necessarily any proof that Ade Blackburn isn'''t Meighan'''s alter ego, and that awkward speech impediment may actually just be an audible interpretation of pain '' chronic stomachache leading to a grit of the teeth, you think? Either way, Blackburn'''s tense moan perfectly complements every aspect of his band, whether in the speed at which he keeps up with every beat or the soft grind his voice adds to each slow drone. If you get up close enough, you might see bassist Brian Campbell letting off a squinty smile through his surgical mask. But Blackburn won'''t smile, '''cause he'''s got to focus on his strain. Luckily for him, this is the first of only eight North American dates on the Visitations tour this year, so he'''ll be able to fix whatever'''s ailing him in no time at all. Far too solid a live act for a venue this small. Bring a scalpel and $7 for Guinness. (CB)

wouldn't you rather watch the band in a smaller venue?

I saw them at the Showbox in Seattle a while back (it's about as big as the Fonda in L.A.), and they did well even for a venue that big. The Troubadour's one of the smaller L.A. venues, though - at least they're there instead of something bigger, though the damn thing sold out, apparently. Phooey.

the show was fantastic! the ambience at the troub and the audience couldn't be better ... although my photographs could have been had the lighting not have been so deficient. the band and neesh buttoo (manager) were a top bunch not to mention incredibly kind and humble. they even allowed my daughter to sleep in the dressing room during the show! good times :)

the show was brilliant! the ambience at the troub and the audience couldn't have been more ideal... although my photographs could have had the lighting been less deficient. needless to say, the boys in the band and neesh buttoo (manager) were a top bunch not to mention incredibly kind and humble. they even allowed my daughter to sleep in their dressing during the show. granted they almost sat on her as she slumbered on the couch but hey they made up for it by autographing her copy of walking with thee :) good times

Your daughter would be the coolest kid ever if she could one day claim that Clinic sat on her.
