L.A. Today: Birds of Avalon

Birds Of Avalon @ The Scene, 3/20

Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Raleigh North Carolina'''s Birds of Avalon (pun intended) emerged from the unfortunate demise of the double drum-boasting Cherry Valence. CV alums Paul Siler and Cheetie Kumar ... if that really is her name ... demonstrate their seemingly telekinetic dual lead guitar attack once again in Birds of Avalon, but forgo the second drummer and his accompanying tardiness, drug habit, and girlfriend thievery. Okay, enough drummer jokes. With the help of several people from several bands, none of which I'''ve heard of -- Craig Tilley (The Weather), Scott Nurkin (Dynamite Brothers), and David Mueller (no credentials available) -- Siler and Kumar remain dutifully loyal to their retro roots. While Birds is far less riffy than its predecessor, the band'''s nucleus continues to conjure some damn tasty licks. Think galloping rhythms and equal parts blues, prog, and stadium rock seen through a late 70s prism. Now, if only they still made Quaaludes. (ZH)
