L.A. Today: Berko

Berko @ Spaceland, 3/5

Yet another product of the fertile federation of L.A. musicians that contribute to Fairmona, B.R.A.M., Benji Hughes' band, Hour of the Shipwreck and countless others, Berko is a five-dimensional pop rocketship helmed by painter/writer/musician Jake Bercovici. The band is all over the place stylistically, sometimes working a cheeky electro-funk groove like a hotter Hot Chip, other times neatly folding classic Tin Pan Alley songcraft into po-mo pop songs that burst with synths, acoustic guitars, rock beats and tight harmonies. There's even a little bit of TV on the Radio in Berko's fondness for massed vocal lines. It's the kind of music that you'd want to hear on pop radio even if you didn't like it, just so that you could be happier with the state of pop radio. No wonder they were tapped to play alongside Kanye West and Gnarls Barkley in Vegas a couple weeks back. This is night one of Berko's March residency at Spaceland. You'll be coming back. Also on this bill: the deliciously twangful singer-songwriter Langhorne Slim and some twisted Aussie glam from The Panda Band. (ER)
