It's going to be hard to get through writing this post without throwing a lot of barbs at all involved, but I'll try my best to stick to the facts. Morrissey has "asked" (which is probably a polite way of saying "forced") the band Kristeenyoung (pictured) to cease and desist as opening act for the lengthy tour Moz is currently on. (If you're wondering, "Is a band called Kristeenyoung led by a girl named Kristeen Young?" you're absolutely correct.) It seems that Morrissey took offense to an ill-advised attempt at a joke Ms. Young let lose on stage during Tuesday night's show at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York. Brooklyn Vegan has the story here, including a tortured attempt at an explanation from Young, and forum commenters letting us in on what exactly Young's off-color words were. Follow on after the jump to find out...Seems that Young, in response to a crowd that was not exactly being receptive to her music, tried to shock and awe by announcing, "Morrissey gives good head, oops, I mean cunnilingus."
Okay, now that I'm done with the facts, I can editorialize about why both sides here are being ridiculous. I guess it's not a surprise to find the ever-emotional Moz taking offense with that statement, but come on, what Young said is so lame, it shouldn't warrant any kind of response. Morrissey seems to be playing directly in to Young's pitiful attempt at garnering attention. On the other hand, a lot of what Young says in her defense is patently insipid. She claims what she said was supposed to be "metaphorical and overstated to make an artistic point." I've heard of a lot of wacky things labeled "art" over the years, but that really takes the cake. She also says the statement "was in keeping with the tone of my writing in general. I reach for beauty and intelligence in my lyrics." Well, then, I'm going to stop typing here, because now I have to run out and grab a Kristeenyoung album for more of her intelligent, beautiful lyrics...
