NME is reporting that Kooks frontman Luke Pritchard and Arctic Monkeys (and Last Shadow Puppets) frontman Alex Turner hate each other. Pritchard even says he “had to kick” Turner in the face.
All this is probably huge news for the anglophiles over at NME, but I can’t help but sigh a big “Who cares?” Neither band has made a classic album (like the Stones and Beatles, who used to be rumored adversaries) have entertaining personalities (like Oasis and Blur) or lack subtlety of any kind (even though it has no Englishmen, that awesome Axl Rose and Vince Neil dust-up in the early 90s).
This smacks of one band (The Kooks) feeling like they are unappreciated greats (the Arctics are pretty huge in England) and in a desperate attempt to drive up disappointing record sales, they have decided to start a feud. The only way this will become interesting is if one band is forced to retire after a cage match.
I think a lot of bands go at the Arctic Monkeys since they're probably the biggest band from the UK in the last few years.
Well they should battle it out for the title of "s--ttiest band of the year 2000 and beyond."
Um... anglophiles at the NME? Yeah, how weird that an British music magazine writes about one of the biggest bands in Britain. Weird world ain't it? I see those americaphiles at Paste have stuck a yank actress on their cover! Whatever next.
anglo-anglophile
