Knitting Factory moving from Manhattan to Brooklyn

The Knitting Factory has been a fixture on the New York music scene for over 20 years. The venue began booking bands in its original Houston Street location in 1987, giving vital space to bands on the margins of jazz, rock, and hip-hop. In ‘94 the club hosted a memorable DJ set From Richard D. James (a.k.a. Aphex Twin), who stuck a sheet of sandpaper on the turntables and shattered eardrums as he “played” it.

But the venue, which is now located in TriBeCa, is set to turn its back on Manhattan. Rising rents and an uncertain future for the current location have meant that owner Jared Hoffman has had to look for Brooklyn for inspiration. The Knitting Factory is set to open in Williamsburg, at 361 Metropolitan Avenue, some time in the next four to nine months.

Hoffman remains optimistic about the move, and told the New York Times: “In very exciting ways it would be a return to the old Knitting Factory. We want to do something smaller and more radical and more revolutionary again.” The Knitting Factory, which also has a location in Los Angeles, is set to open at two other locations, in Boise, Idaho, and Spokane, Washington, in the near future. Damn this was the closest venue to me!

So the rumors are true. It's taking over the space that was the Brooklyn Luna Lounge.

I've been keeping my eye on this. It sucks that all these venues are either closing down completely or moving. A Knitting Factory in Boise is a little weird, too.

At least it's not shutting down completely.

Damn, I don't want to go to Brooklyn haha.

Bryan have you been to the Luna space? It's really kind of awesome... or it could be.

Nah never really been to Brooklyn before. It's too far where I currently live so I never go to Brooklyn shows.

I think this is a great move for them. Although the current location is much closer to me, there was never anything to do after a show in that area. Also, I heard the sight lines were better at Luna

The sightlines are great in the space... for the photogs, the light is crap, like maddeningly so. Maybe the Knit will fix that.

Why all the Boise hate? It's a great town. That's great news for the bands hoofing it on tour West from Seattle/Portland. Looks like it's open already: http://www.pollstar.com/tour/searchall.pl?By=City&Content=boise%2C+id
