Kerrang Magazine: they "get" punk

Via: Product Shop NYC
Words can't describe just how horrible Kerrang magazine's list of "The 50 Greatest Punk Albums" is. Now I'm hardly a grizzled veteran of the scene, but I'm pretty sure that neither Green Day nor Offspring released two of the fifty greatest punk albums each. I'm also fairly certain my 80 year-old grandmother is more punk than Blink 182, but maybe I'm just biased. Here's the top five:

  • 5. The Offspring -- Smash (1994)

  • 4. Nirvana -- Nevermind (1991)

  • 3. Dead Kennedys -- Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables (1980)

  • 2. Green Day -- Dookie (1994)

  • 1. Sex Pistols -- Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols (1977)

The sad part is, at some point an editor looked over this list and said to themself "Yeah, Green Day is way more punk than The Clash, Iggy Pop or The Ramones ever were. Let alone those also-rans like Bad Brains or Fugazi."
Seriously, the editors of Kerrang should take a good, hard look in the mirror and think about what they've done. Throwing in the towel seems like a perfectly viable option here. This is "Beyonce on the cover of Spin" bad. Click on the link above to read the rest of the list, assuming you think you can stomach it.

I would've forgave them if they put Jawbreaker, Avail or Fifteen on there.

shockingly bad. It almost seems like they wanted people to be angry. I am actually in awe.Was this made by a 12 year old? In 1994?

Ditto to this being redunk. Ranking Dookie above the first two Clash albums is the most juvenile foolishness I've ever come across.

As much as I love Green Day and the Offspring, saying that they are "more punk" than the legends that made the bottom of the list is terrible. And Nirvana! They may have had punk influences, but they belong to another genre.
Spin magazine's list is even worse. -.-
