Watch Kendrick Lamar Bring out J. Cole in Detroit for a Surprise Performance

The two artists performed cuts from Cole's last two albums

Kendrick Lamar released his critically-acclaimed, chart-dominating, double platinum album, DAMN., earlier this year. He’s currently in the midst of a massive tour in support of the record with Travis Scott and DRAM. But last night at Detroit’s Place Of Auburn Hills, he brought out a surprise guest, Fayetteville’s own, J. Cole. In the fan videos, it’s apparent that Cole’s appearance was widely celebrated by Lamar’s fans.

Cole came out and performed a Lamar-assisted version of “Deja Vu,” the R&B-tinged club banger from his 2016 album, 4 Your Eyez Only. He also went on to perform 2014 Forest Hills Drive cuts: “No Role Models” and “A Tale Of 2 Citiez.” The latter track received a Kendrick Lamar remix on Black Friday 2015. Simply titled “Black Friday,” Lamar turned “A Tale Of 2 Citiez” into a four minute fiery freestyle with no hooks or choruses, just pure bars and emotion. Additionally, Cole released his own “Black Friday” track, remixing To Pimp A Butterfly‘s centerpiece track, “Alright.”

It’s been a good week for Detroit fans of the two rappers — a few days prior to last night’s performance, Cole headlined the same venue. There have been rumors about a Kendrick Lamar & J. Cole album dating back to 2011. Lamar giving his stage to Cole for several songs leads us to believe that their friendship is still as close as ever. But rumors thus far have just been rumors. On Cole’s “Alright” remix, he seemed to put the idea to bed with the lyric: “When you and K. Dot shit drop? Bitch never, they can’t handle two Black n*ggas this clever.”

Cole isn’t the first guest to grace the stage during the DAMN. Tour; over the weekend, Lamar brought out 2 Chainz and Travis Scott to perform 2 Chainz’ “4 AM” and Scott’s “Goosebumps.”
