Katy Perry, Victoria Beckham to be Guest Judges on American Idol

There’s a Paula Abdul-sized hole in the American Idol judging panel, causing widespread speculation as to who will be her permanent replacement. The makers of the show have yet to decide on a new judge, and are introducing a series of special guest replacements for Abdul in the interim.

"What we need to find is someone who has great chemistry,” said Fox chairman Peter Rice. “It really is a casting job.” The first two guest judges will be Victoria Beckham and Kate Perry, who will each appear on one show alongside regulars Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi.

Beckham hasn’t released an album since the notorious flop Open Your Eyes in 2003, so her choice is somewhat surprising. It’s been almost a decade since the last Spice Girls album, Forever, which also flopped. Her credentials as a good judge of pop talent are open to question, and with her husband angling for a move back to European club soccer, it seems unlikely that Beckham will become a permanent fixture on the show.
