Katie Holmes and Beck cited in Scientology protest

A version of the Arthur Miller play All My Sons, which just opened on Broadway, was the scene of a large-scale anti-Scientology demonstration last night. The play, which stars Dianne Wiest and John Lithgow, also includes a small role for Katie Holmes, who was targeted by protestors outside the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre in midtown Manhattan.

Holmes’s Scientologist husband Tom Cruise was present at the performance, and according to this Fox News report “about two dozen well-dressed young people poured into the theater with Cruise, and took orchestra seats.” Fellow Scientologists perhaps? Or maybe just Cruise's security team? Protestors outside the venue held up a number of banners and posters decrying Scientology, with one saying : “Run, Katie, Run! (And take Beck with you).”

The protesters were mostly from the Anonymous group, who wear masks to disguise themselves during their remonstrations against the Scientologists. The character of V from V for Vendetta is one of the most popular guises of the group, who reportedly claimed last night that: “Scientology kills people. It follows you home at night. It is perverted.” [NME]

The protesters are perverted. They are paid dupes. I can believe the news stoops to cover this idiocy.

Weatherman is a blatant scientologist. They are protesting because they are outraged by the dangerous cult.

I really hope that people will be given a chance to escape from the cult.

It was another peaceful protest and no Anonymous member in the audience upset the play or Katie Holmes' small performance.

There were several Scientologists there with Tom Cruise (the front row was cleared for them). They were quite motionless and quiet - only to clap, laugh and stand whenever Tom did.

Most of my group watched them more than the play.

I had noticed raving reviews from some sources, but I thought it was very basic. Nothing to "rave" about, some funny stuff, but nothing to garner the applause Holmes received from the orchestra seats.

These protestors are a disgrace to New Yorkers. Their Halloween garb and antics are an interruption to people trying to just see the play, which be all accounts is really good. Katie and Beck can believe whatever they want. These rag-tag moppets are bigots to say the least. And this is the group that just illegally hacked into Sarah Palin's email. Pleeeezze go away.

Scientologists have super powers. They have often paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for them. Why don`t they just vaporize the protesters ? No, instead they apply a policy called

The Anonymous group claims to have nothing to do with the Sarah Palin e-mail infiltration. They've blamed 4Chan.

I love Anonymous for the good work they are going to dismantle the Church of Scientology. I love NY Anons/critics because they are good intentioned, persistent and definately effective in getting the "Scientology is a cult" and "FREE KATIE" messages out there. I hope Katie or her family & friends & her Scientology "handlers" saw or heard the protesters because they protested with compassion for the truth and rallied for the freedom of one of the many victims of that cult.

I was inside the Barricade with this great group of kids. It was my first time protesting anything I thought was wrong. It won't be my last. The assertions that they / we were paid by some evil Pharmaceutical cabal is rubbish worthy only of some paranoid delusion science fiction novel. I work 70+ hours a week at a real job to support myself. It is sad and alarming that Scientology has now reduced the sum total of their movement to a bizarre rant against Prozac. And they get tax exemption status for that? I was inside the barricade when one of the suspected Scientology agitators came up to us saying "Lets go raid the Org, let's go break all their windows!" He then attempted to push his way into the barricade past a female protester. He placed his hands on her to bodily move her out of the way. If it wasn't for the quick response by the NYPD, this could have been a serious case of assault by a suspected Scientologist agitator on one of our members. Just by luck we caught this guy on film and I hope we may eventually ID him much in the same way Scientologists have ID'd protesters by photographing them. What is really scary is that the Scientologist internal paramilitary Security organization has been reported to follow protesters home and stalk them at their places of employment, while Scientology affiliated law firms issue protesters with cease and desist notices. Refuse to live in fear, stand up and be heard!

Where were they at Street Scene last night? I would've loved to see them.

I find it funny to see all the sheeple out their protesting a church that spent more time, effort and money defending their rights as human beings than any other organization. The church has sponsored anti-drug campaigns, human rights campaigns, disaster response and education programs. Also, the media failed to mention the protesters who actually read what the church stands for and what the church is doing to better mankind and threw down their signs and left.

September 22, 2008 at 11:12 p.m.

James,
you obviously weren't there. No one threw down their signs. We collected all of our possessions, including our signs, policed our garbage and then left in small groups at the same time.

Total FAIL there James.
