Kanye West is notorious for reading and reacting to his press, and his angry, caps locked diatribes over at Kanye University have been a constant source of humor this year. The latest post is a little different, though. West has been anointed by the recent rash of best of 00's lists as one of this decade's luminaries. Entertainment Weekly just named West's 2004 debut, The College Dropout, as its best album of the decade, and West used his blog to deliver an acceptance speech. "This project wasn't about me," he wrote, "it was about a time in people's lives where people force opinions on you, and you have to make choices for yourself." West goes on to thank EW for including Jay-Z's The Blueprint on the list. Big surprise; that album was an early showcase for West's production talents. He also shouts out Outkast's Speakerboxxx/The Love Below and 50 Cent's Get Rich or Die Tryin' as his personal runners up.
The College Dropout was an odd choice for the best album of the decade, but it's influence can't be denied. Today's wave of well-dressed, confessional emcees can be traced directly back to West; Kid Cudi, Charles Hamilton, Drake, et al. owe him their very careers. His production technique made waves too. How many swagger jackers jumped on the chipmunk soul bandwagon in the wake of The College Dropout? [MTV]
Kanye is an interesting and unique presence, but his spawn (Drake, Kid Cudi, and particularly Lupe Fiasco) are repugnant. We only need one manic depressive metrosexual commercial hip-hop MC thank you.
I did forget to mention Fiasco in the article... But Lupe repugnant? Commercial? Can't cosign either of those. Do me a favor, name me 5 newcomer emcees better than Lupe and I'll eat my words, cause far as I'm concerned, he's top notch.
And you know what, rappers are metro by trade. Hip hop is and has always been a fashion-centric culture. Think back. "My Adidas?" You can't blame that on the new class. A lot of people, myself included, happen to find those guys' eschewing of the macho BS running the commercial rap game to be a welcome sea change.
I definitely agree that rappers are metro by trade - image and style always key components of the game from the very beginning...I guess I just don't *like* Kanye's style or his "sensitive guy" tendencies, and I especially don't like them when they're diluted by his proteges. Overall, I tend more towards the Southern rappers and coke rappers. If you're gonna be a bit more sensitive and not cover the traditional hip-hop subject matter I prefer you go way out - Anticon, Doom, Prefuse 73, etc. then just whine about whatever's on your mind.
Fair enough. Kanye's never made it easy to like him, and I could see someone getting tired of these guys' emo tendencies. Just hasn't happened to me yet.
I agree with Longest Winter on Lupe! His talent is undeniable and he is so underrated as of now.
Whoever
Prolly wouldnt have gone with that, but its a very good choice.. Also I love cudi and drake and HEART lupe and charles hamilton! I think kanye may be remembered for being the first really girly rapper.. lol but I think his 'spawn' may outdo him in terms of becoming rap legends anyway.. Whether its charles or drake..
