Hip-hop reigns supreme this week on the Billboard 200 chart as Kanye West and Nicki Minaj took the number one and two spots, respectively. Yeezy's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy pushed an estimated 497,000 units* while Minaj's Pink Friday came in at approximately 376,000 units sold.
It's not that bad of a first week showing for either of them, but I honestly figured at least Kanye would sell more than that considering how goddamn cheap it was online. I'm expecting it will remain pretty high on the charts in the coming weeks, though, as the holiday sales continue. In case you were wondering, 808s & Heartbreak, which dropped in 2008, sold 450,000 copies in its first week.
The most disappointing news from the past week's sales, though, is that Yelawolf only moved 5,000 units of his fantastic Trunk Muzik: 0-60. Hmph.

shocked Ye didn't sell more. 500K is of course still a lot but thought it'd be the biggest hip-hop release of the year.
This is still an impressive tally considering he doesn't have any huge singles out right now. I think most of the sales for this album come more from people sincerely expecting a good product as opposed to a hype machine at work.
That's how I felt, Ivan.
not having a big single probably hurt, but it's crazy to me that Taylor Swift and Eminem crushed him in terms of sales. It's even nuttier that Nicki Minaj almost sold 400k!
