Johnny Cash’s “American VI” To Be Released In February

In an announcement that’s slightly more chipper than the idea of the Man in Black playing power ballads on Guitar Hero 5, the sixth and final chapter in Johnny Cash’s American Recordings will see posthumous release Feb. 26, which not incidentally would have been Cash’s 78th birthday.

The songs on American VI: Ain’t No Grave were recorded immediately after the sessions that would become American V, and featured work from many of the same players, including producer Rick Rubin. It features covers of artists ranging from Sheryl Crow to the last monarch of Hawaii, Queen Lili’uokalani, and a Cash original entitled “I Corinthians: 15:55.” With a song title like that, maybe if he had lived to see it Cash could have worked with John Darnielle on Life of the World to Come.
