Now that he's done apologizing for being a general idiot and hurling racial slurs, John Mayer has resumed his post as scion of new media. Though he's somehow amassed 3.2 million Twitter followers since he joined, they'll probably be spilling tears on their keyboards when they hear that the musician has proclaimed that the reign of Twitter is coming to an end.
At ASCAP's 2010 "I Create Music" Expo, he discussed the pain and strife he's gone through lately while contemplating quitting the microblogging service, saying, "Within the last couple weeks, every night I think about canceling my Twitter account because I think it's pretty much done. I just think Twitter as a form of communication, I think it's over to be honest with you."
While his earth-shattering statements no doubt left his millions of minions scrambling for grief counseling, Mayer later went on his blog to clarify that "Twitter iis not over, I'm over it." So where shall his followers turn to? According to the radio-friendly rocker: rival blogging platform Tumblr. Mayer says, "It's the future of social networking if your image of the future features intelligent discourse. I love reading other Tumblr users replies, because they're thoughtful by virtue of the fact that if they're not, they'll bring the intellectual property value of their own blog down, and that's a commodity on Tumblr." Because nothing says "intelligent discourse" like flirting with a 16-year-old on services like Twitter. [via Hypebot]
