For the eighth year in a row, esteemed members of the punk rock community and fans gathered at New York City’s Fillmore East on May 19 to celebrate late great singer’s birthday. This year’s event boasted performances by Local H, Semi-Precious Weapons, and birthday bash regulars Manitoba’s Wild Kingdom. The Shangri-La’s Mary Weiss brought down the house during her set of girl group classics when joined by the Psychedelic Fur’s keyboardist, Joe McGinty on "Leader of the Pack"
Joey Ramone's brother (his real brother), Mickey Leigh led a punk super group: Bobby Steele (Misfits), Richard Lloyd (Television), Ivan Julian (Richard Hell and the Voidoids), and Jesse Malin, through the closing set of classic Ramones’ songs ("Chinese Rock," "Blitzkrieg Bop," "I Want You Around."). The final song of the evening? A posthumous bagpipe-led "Happy Birthday" sing-a-long. Who knew Joey Ramone (nee Jeffrey Hyman) was Scottish? [Spin]
