Do we want to hear another NMH album? Music was just a part of Magnum's journey, more a piece of himself than of the recorded world. If he's happier writing short stories or sitting on people's faces, there is no reason for him to be recording. What made Aeroplane, in my estimation, the greatest album ever written was the fact that it wasn't merely an effort to create admirable music--perhaps his mission was not even to express himself. The album feels like a "record" in the realest sense, an artifact of a much more profound and abstract movement within Mangum himself. It's hard for me to say something like that given my own obsession with his work. But I have to admit that when that Mangum hoax was all over the internet, I couldn't bring myself to be as excited as I wanted myself to be. |
