Jay-Z Keeps It So Hard On Oprah In Australia

· by

I remember a time, many years ago (13 years ago) when Jay-Z used to scare parents. My own folks bristled at buying me Vol. 2...Hard Knock Life when I was 12, citing the parental advisory sticker, and the fact that the "n" word was in a song title. Now, being that Jay-Z is appearing on Oprah, and not just normal Oprah shows, but also this recent show in Australia, I bet moms are buying their kids Jay-Z albums like never before. I mean, Jay-Z is soccer mom friendly now. That's probably great for his brand, but I'm with Damon Dash on this one.

I know this is old news by now--re: Jay-Z selling out to big business--but doesn't it make you wonder if this kind of mainstream crossover would have been possible for Biggie or Tupac? Biggie I think definitely, but Tupac's outspokenness might have prevented it. It's an interesting question, since Jay really profited off those two guys leaving a power vacuum at the top of hip-hop. I know that happened. We covered it here. But still; On Oprah? A woman who for years hated rap music, and only came around on Jay-Z because he was more "articulate" than she assumed rappers were. It's insulting to him, and he doesn't really care.
