Jay-Z Facing Lawsuit Over "Big Pimpin'"
More than ten years after it became a smash, someone is suing Jay-Z over "Big Pimpin'" because he didn't properly clear the sample. Last week, a judge in California ruled that Osama Ahmed Famhy has a case, as he is claiming that Jay-Z violated Egypt's "moral rights" law. That's not what you think it means: Because Jigga altered the original song--"Khosara, Khosara"--he had to clear the sample with every one of original musician Baligh Hamdy's children, who were not all talked to. The lawsuit also names EMI, MTV, UMG, Warner Brothers, Paramount Pictures, Jay-Z and others. "Big Pimpin'" is above, and the original song is below. There's no figure amount announced for the lawsuit, but it'll probably be huge.
