When it comes to free summer concert series in New York City, Prospect Park's Celebrate Brooklyn and Central Park's Summerstage may be the big dogs on the block, but the scrappy Stuyvesant Town underdog Music on the Oval is nipping at their heels. This summer, Stuytown's concert series will bring the music-hungry masses a free, cutting-edge combo of band and DJ every Wednesday night from June 10 to July 15. Things kick off with The Budos Band's fatback funk, and go on to include everything from Jay Reatard's raging Memphis garage rock to Forro in the Dark's Brazilian party and the nimble-fingered guitar chops of Kaki King. DJs opening up the shows will include Ticklah, Raspberry Jones, and more.
For non-New Yorkers (or inattentive locals), Stuyvesant Town is the area that borders Union Square and the East Village, and the Oval is at the center of an 80-acre tree-lined lawn between 16th and 18th Streets and Avenues A and B, with the entrance off First Avenue and 16th St.
Music on the Oval schedule:
6.10 The Budos Band, DJ Honeydripper
6.17 Phenomenal Handclap Band, DJ Duane Harriott
6.24 Easy Star All-Star Band, Ticklah
7.1 Jay Reatard, Doug Mosurock, Mr. Vacation
7.8 Forro in the Dark, DJ Probus
7.15 Kaki King, Justin Carter & Raspberry Jones
