Jay Electronica Joined by Pharoahe Monch @ Red Hook Park, Brooklyn (Video)

Perhaps more famous for his work with Erykah Badu and Nas than for his own idiosyncratic, film-inspired stylings, Jay Electronica has yet to even release his solo debut, Act III: The Debut Album. In spite of this, his reputation in the music community is such that he headlined Red Hook Park alongside Dan Deacon as part of NYC’s Summerstage series last night. Things really heated up when Jay Electronica invited Pharoahe Monch onstage for a five-minute a capella free-verse.

Playing to an enthusiastic crowd, Monch elicited more than a few chuckles when he delved into the political with lines like: “flip Bloomberg the bird, bitch/More blood that Blackula” and “Mind control/make you shoot your best friend in the face/Dick Cheney.” Monch’s quick-wit, sharp humor, and complex, multisyllabic verses made him a highlight of the evening.
