Texan songstress Jana Hunter's tunes may not seem overtly freaky enough on first impression to qualify her as straight-up "freak folk," but she's certainly earned her bona fides in that department nonetheless. Like a number of her peers, she was first introduced to the world at large through the Arthur Magazine-sponsored, Devendra Banhart-curated compilation Golden Apples of the Sun, which in retrospect is looking more and more like the Big Bang of neo-folk all the time. And her Blank Unstaring Heirs of Doom was the flagship release on Gnomonsong, the label started by Banhart and Vetiver's Andy Cabic. This summer you can decide for yourself whether Hunter is freak-folk, acid-folk, beard-rock (sans the beard), indie-folk, or just a plain ol' singer-songwriter, when she brings her bewitching style to a sonic emporium near you.
