Jamie Smith from The xx has undertaken the unenviable task of remixing every track from one of the strongest comeback albums of the year—Gil Scott-Heron’s I’m New Here. The project is titled We’re New Here, and will be released as a CD and vinyl box set on Feb. 21, with the latter apparently featuring a “deluxe” and instrumental version of the LP.
There’s a special website for the remix album here, which includes a streaming version of “New York Is Killing Me” that can be heard in the YouTube video above. Smith has shifted the track away from its sparse beginnings and weaved extracts of Scott-Heron’s vocals around bleep-heavy electronics and galloping drum patterns, suggesting this project is going to be markedly different to the original recordings.
