James Mercer Journeys Through Past On Neil Young Cover

James Mercer doesn't need to be playing with The Shins or Broken Bells to up his indie heartthrob status. The singer/guitarist contributed to the soundtrack of 180° South, a documentary about the longest road trip ever, with a cover of Neil Young's "Journey Through The Past," from the Canadian legend's be-depressed-all-the-time acoustic phase. Mercer doesn't change the arrangement of the original's plaintive piano yearn, but his voice is a little more strained than Young's, who always sounded like the saddest, smallest boy in the world on songs like this. There's some proper noun changing--Mercer goes "back to my home town," where Young went back to Canada, but it's all hunky dory. You can stream the song here. [I Guess I'm Floating]
