Jack White Defends Meg From "Reverse-Contrarian Hipsters"

Jack White is doing a little promo around the release of The White Stripes movie Under Great Northern Lights, and he has found himself leaping to the defense of Meg White’s drumming skills. At times it feels like The White Stripes could have spiraled off into a muso bore nightmare without Meg on hand to steady the ship, but apparently not everyone sees things that way.

"Her femininity and extreme minimalism are too much to take for some metalheads and reverse-contrarian hipsters," White said in an interview with the New York Post. "She can do what those with 'technical prowess' can't. She inspires people to bash on pots and pans. For that, they repay her with gossip and judgment."

I’m with Jack on this one, and believe Meg adds an enormous amount to the band that she doesn’t get credit for. But the real question here is: who has got up Jack’s nose with these allegations? Who is this reverse-contrarian hipster, and where can we find him? (I’m assuming it’s a him).

Meg's the perfect drummer for Jack. There's this one moment on "Hypnotise" where she goes straight into mid-verse drumming without a lead-in. I can think of no other song where that happens, and it's a brilliant display of their chemistry. It sticks out even after like 100 listens.

I love the term "reverse-contrarian hipster." Once I full figure out what it means, I'll be using it constantly.

I agree: "Reverse-contrarian hipster" is a really nice phrase.

I agree that Meg's a great fit for someone like Jack. That said, I disagree that she's got any talent when compared relative to any other professional drummer in the history of popular music.

For someone whose drumming concept is to be simple period, I'm not surprised at all the hate Meg White gets for her drumming. Is Meg White a great drumming personality? Yes. Is she in a famous rock band? Yes. Will she lose the simple drumming on the next White Stripes album? No.

For the record, I'll be using the phrase "reverse contrarian hipster" only because its so ridiculously stupid.

Meg's drumming really helps define the bands sound. Meg is adorable, and when the band was started, she had never played drums before. She just picked up the sticks and played along with Jack. Jack loved the sound they made together, and TWS were formed. And the fact that something so simple can go so far, Meg should be praised, not criticized.

I know when playing along on guitar myself, the way she plays the drums really puts you right in the middle of the music. The ringing of her set really fills your head and it consumes you.

Also, I believe it should be said that Jack's playing isn't overly complicated either. It's mostly the E, A, D, G, or F chords he's using, and it's almost all composed with blues progressions and scales. I'm sure any avid guitarist should agree with me on this, and that most of TWS's music is easy to follow along on.

All of this being said, I totally agree with Jack. And yes, reverse-contrarian hipsters is an awesome phrase.

Jack could duct-tape a tambourine to his heel and it would be enough of a rhythm section. He plays the drums with his axe. Non-virtuosos play an incredibly vital role to the creative process; contributing real feeling and heart. Of course, this is coming from a non-virtuoso who thinks his opinion is relevant.

Robert

it doesnt matter if shes good.
shes in the band and the band is phenomenal.
if there was more people in the band nobody would bad mouth her
