Jack White may have just executed a near-perfect perfect April Fool’s day joke. A page on the Third Man website claims a new solo track from the former White Stripes frontman was launched yesterday—quite literally, as a series of flexi-discs were sent sailing into the sky attached to helium balloons.
Or did they? Frankly, it’s hard to tell. A press release from Third Man states it’s “no April Fools,” and that 1,000 flexi discs containing the song “Freedom at 21” (from the upcoming Blunderbuss) were sent skyward from Third Man HQ in Nashville. There was even a YouTube video produced (below) to herald the event.
A statement on the Third Man website reveals further information:
“Accompanying the balloons were custom postcards with instructions for the finders to submit photos, discovery location and the date on which the record was found, all of which will be incorporated into a website where fans can access the information at http://thirdmanrecords.com/balloon"
Did this happen? We don’t know. If it was a prank, it was certainly well executed.
